Application Procedures
Step 1: Order the required $500 Surety Bond and Oath of Office Form, as well as any other supplies you may need, from The Notary's Store
All applicants for the office of notary public for the State of Wisconsin are require to purchase a $500 surety bond before completing the application process, except in the case of licensed attorneys who are not required to submit a bond.
New and Renewing Notary Packages
Renewing Notary Packages do not come with a notary journal
Our New and Renewal Notary Packages DO NOT include your required $500 Wisconsin Notary bond. The State of Wisconsin requires purchasing your notary bond, which you will need to send along with your notary application.
Each applicant for the office of notary public for the State of Wisconsin and Oath Form is required to purchase a 4-year $500 notary bond.
Please visit The Notary's Store you will be entering the Wisconsin section for your official notary supplies. We offer a New Notary Supply Package and Renewing Notary Supply Package that includes your required Wisconsin notary seal/stamp, Wisconsin Notary Journal and other needed notary supplies at a special reduced price, but you will need to order your required $500 Wisconsin Notary Bond separately. Wisconsin law does not require a notary to keep a record of his/her official acts, but it is recommended to do so. A register will offer an excellent way of recalling past notarial acts. If a notary is called upon to testify in court, a register may help establish what actually took place. The Wisconsin Notary Journal, also available in the online store, functions perfectly as a Wisconsin notary journal, and was specifically designed for this purpose, and contains many elements not available in other registers. To order, enter the required information, scroll down through the page to locate the notary packages or you can purchase your notary supplies separately. Follow the instructions through checkout. Once you have your official bond you may proceed with step 2.
Note: An Errors and Omissions insurance policy does not replace a bond, but will help to repay the bonding company if a claim is ever made. An errors and omissions policy is not required by law, but may be purchased as it protects the notary public and pays for any charges the notary might owe for legal fees and costs should the notary be sued.
Your surety bond comes with an attached oath of office form you will need to complete in the presence of an individual qualified to take oaths, such as a commissioned notary public, in the State of Wisconsin. You will need to make arrangements to have a notary public take your acknowledgment under oath or affirmation that the information provided in the application is true. Your signature in the Oath portion of the Application will need to be notarized. Step 2: Download and complete the Wisconsin Notary Public Application and Oath of Office
When you have received your bond and oath form as well as your official seal from The Notary's Store you will need to complete a Wisconsin notary public application. Make a copy of the actual bond for your records.
Wisconsin Notary Public Application
Download and complete the application according to the instructions provided. When you are certain the application is complete and correct submit it as well as a $20.00 filing fee, the completed surety bond, and completed oath form to the Office of the Secretary of State of Wisconsin. Make your $20 check or money order payable to "Wisconsin Secretary of State". Commissions are issued every Wednesday. Effective January 1, 2005, applications for reappointment of commission are processed the Wednesday after receipt. Any time remaining from a previous commission term lapses whenever a new commission is issued. Remember, you may not perform notarial acts until notified by this office that your commission has been issued, or reissued in the case of a reappointment. A commission certificate will be sent to the mailing address indicated on this application.
Wisconsin Attorney Notary Public Application
The form used to apply for the attorney's notary public commission consists of a one page application and one page of instructions. An oath of office and bond are not part of the attorney's application process and need not be submitted. This application may be used ONLY by applicants who are licensed to practice law in Wisconsin. Note that any attorney who has had a Wisconsin Notary Public commission previously revoked may apply only for a four year commission.
Step 3: Await notice from the state
A commission certificate will be sent to the mailing address indicated on the application. Once you have received the commission certificate notifying you of your appointment you may begin your duties as a notary public for the State of Wisconsin.
